This position will report to the St. Cloud Field Station or Orlando Service Center depending on the applicant selected.
This experienced scientist position participates in programs administered by the Land Stewardship Section and performs a variety of duties to assure District-owned lands are properly managed for recreational and ecological purposes. This position conducts a wide range of technical and complex land management activities requiring a working knowledge of various ecological principles as well as expertise acquired through a combination of past work experience and formal educational training. Duties include prescribed burning, exotic plant control, mechanical vegetation control, public use/recreation management, vegetation and wildlife monitoring, and developing and implementing hydrologic and vegetative restoration projects. Incumbent prioritizes work flow for mitigation properties in the Upper Lakes Region and utilizes GIS to track resource management projects and successes. Incumbent develops budgets and tracks expenditures and assists with the development of management plans and annual reports. Incumbent writes, initiates, and implements statements of work for contracted land management activities and management agreements and supervises contractors. The position is also responsible for assisting and advising the regulatory staff in the Orlando Service Center regarding mitigation and resource management needs. The incumbent will coordinate with the Orlando Orange County Expressway Authority and the DEP on the development and presentation of mitigation plans as needed.
Incumbent shall possess strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to work productively in a group setting with co-workers and outside agencies. Assignments for developmental purposes may include some work that is typical of a higher level scientist position.
Education/Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor’s Degree in biology, ecology, wildlife, or a related natural science discipline is preferred and 4+ years of related experience that demonstrates measurable career progression within the field of natural resource management.
Equivalent combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Licenses:
Valid State of Florida Driver’s License.
Possession or ability to acquire within 180 days State of Florida prescribed burners certification.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment:
The work environment is a combination of office and field work, with regular exposure to a hot and humid environment in remote and heavy vegetative areas, with exposure to stinging/biting insects, snakes, and alligators. May be required to lift up to 40 lbs.
Due to the District’s response role and in the total scope of emergency management, this position may at times, be required to provide support before, during and after major storm events and emergency situations, such as hurricanes or other declared emergencies. This position is a member of the Emergency Debris Operations Team.
